About MSP pickup

Passive MSP pickup mic with plastic female jack / not magnetic, not dynamic mic MSP stands for Magnet Sandwiched Pickup. MSP pickup is a piezoelectric transducer contact pickup, passive type for acoustic musical instruments. The MSP installation which has obtained international patents is innovative. Just only sandwiching instrument soundboard with magnets. MSP pickup is available for: popular stringed instruments such as the classic guitar, ukulele and double bass, uncommon stringed instruments such as the koto, harp, hammered dulcimer, percussion such as the handpan, kalimba, and djembe, and other various instruments.
※The picture shows a MSP pickup with specifications of 60 cm cable and a plastic jack.

Full range natural tone from low to high!

Strong magnetic force of neodymium magnets, which consist of the one inside of the MSP and the other, push the piezoelectric element toward the soundboard. This provides louder and higher quality sound without the use of a pre-amp. The MSP has longer sustain and deeper sound than our adhesive type contact piezo-pickup.

No modification needed! No failures! Unharmful installation for instruments.

mic system of keeping in place by magnetsThe installation is simple. Because MSP is kept in place by magnets, musical instruments are not damaged or blemished due to adhesives. Also, the MSP is placed exterior of musical instruments, so it can be installed without making any through hole to a instrument. There is no wiring inside of instruments in using the MSP, and therefore, the disturbing reverberated sound which is caused by wiring touching inside of the instrument would not be made.

The mounting position is free because of magnets. Find your favorite spot.

In most cases, the sound emitted from contact pickups heavily depends on the attachment position. The free mounting position which is enabled by magnets allows the player to control sound output as much as they want, also there is no failure in the installation.

How to Install

Sandwich the soundboard of your instrument by attaching a MSP body on the front and a Positioning Magnet on the back. Be sure to check the magnetic pole of MSP and the Positioning Magnet. If your instrument has braces, DO NOT install MSP on braces. Please read the following contents in this web page for the detail about the installation.

By hand ( Without Positioning Magnet Setter )

When your hand can reach the desired position for the Positioning Magnet, place Positioning Magnet inside of the musical instrument by hand.

With Positioning Magnet Setter

When your hand can't reach the desired position for the Positioning Magnet, use Positioning Magnet Setter.

Positioning Magnet

The Positioning Magnet and the MSP are both used to install the MSP. You can attach the MSP to the soundboard more strongly by piling Positioning Magnets. Changing the pushing force of the MSP towards the soundboard allows the quality/tone of the sound output from the MSP to be controlled. When attaching MSP pickup with less impact by magnets attracting, press the positioning magnet firmly against the soundboard and attract each other with placing your finger between the MSP and the soundboard. After that, take the finger off slowly. Also, when mounting the MSP on a strike drumhead of percussion, add the Positioning Magnets to aboid that the main unit does not float due to the impact of striking the percussion.

【NOTES】■ Before inserting the Positioning Magnet(s) inside the instrument, be sure to check the magnetic pole of MSP and the Positioining Magnet.

Positoning Magnet Setter

how to use Positioning Magnet setter and how to ride across braceshow to use felt cover of magnet setterWhen your hand can't reach the desired position for the Positioning Magnet, use the Positioning Magnet Setter. These are some examples: Ukulele, Double bass ( Upright bass ), etc. We recommend to form the Positioning Magnet Setter into the shape in the picture when inserting the Positioning Magnet to a instrument with braces. When smoothly attaching MSP pickup with less impact, press the positioning magnet firmly against the soundboard and attract each other with placing your finger between the MSP and the soundboard. After that, take the finger off slowly and pull the Positioning Magnet Setter off.

【NOTES】 ■ Some kits do not include any felt cover. ■ If you are concerned about impact to your instrument by magnets attractiong, use a felt cover of a Positioning Magnet Setter. Covering the Positioning Magnet with a Felt-cover can reduce the impact by the magnets attracting, however, the Positioning Magnet may fall inside when the Positioning Magnet Setter is pulled off. At that time, attract the Positioning Mangnet to the tip of the Positioning Magnet Setter and pick the Magnet up. ■ Pull out the felt cover together with the magnet setter. If the felt cover is left inside the instrument, the installation may become unstable. ■ If the Positioning Magnet is put on braces, damage may be caused by the Magnet jumping or the installation may be unstable.■ When inserting the Positioning Magnet to a narrow f-hole, we recommend to use a thin Positioning Magnet. ■ When installing a Positioning Magnet with cushioning using a Positioning Magnet Setter, do not use the felt cover of the Positioning Magnet Setter.

Double-adhesive tape for Positioning Magnet

To fix the Positioning Magnet location use double-adhesive tape. This way you can place the MSP without setting the Positioning Magnet each time. To install the MSP after fixing the Positioning Magnet in place, sandwich a finger between the MSP and the soundboard and take the finger off slowly. Don't slam the MSP and the inside Positioning Magnet.

【ATTENTION】 ■ When using double-adhesive tape to fix the Positioning Magnet, it will not be possible to fine tune the sound produced by the MSP pickup and removing the magnet may prove difficult. ■ Don't slam two magnets severely, it may damage your instruments, the magnets, or piezoelectric element in MSP.

【NOTES】■ It is easy to set the MSP pickup after fixing the positioning magnet, however, it is not possible to adjust the tone by changing the MSP position depending on the factors such as AMP, site, band formation.

Endpin-hanger

Fixing MSP cable tool, Endpin-hanger for guitar
Hang the Endpin-hanger on the end-pin of instruments like guitars to keep the the MSP cable at a useful length.

【ATTENTION】Handle the connector when the MSP cable is hooked onto / taken off the Endpin-hanger. Don't pull the MSP cable, it may disconnect the cable.

Cushioning

Placing Cushioning (rubber or a sheet of felt) between the MSP and the soundboard allows for sound quality and tone being output by the MSP to controlled. You can also stop the MSP from floating on the surface of percussion instruments like the conga by using Cushioning.

The video shows the sound test of line-in recording with three pieces of Cushioning.

This video shows the sound test of AMP with three pieces of Cushioning.

Transparent sticker for protection

Peel off the sticker. The transparent side is the sticker. The lattice patterned side is the sticker's protective layer. Put the sticker on the instrument surface where the MSP is positioned. The sticker uses static electricity instead of adhesion.

Cushion Sticker for Positioning Magnet

Special Cushoning Sticker for Positioning Magnet Attach on a positioning magnet. Cushion Sticker has a sponge-like cushion and reduce the rattling of the Positioning Magnet when attached to a curved surface. The sound quality is changed by using the Positioning Magnet with the Cushion Sticker on a flat surface depending on the instrument. When installing a Positioning Magnet with the Cushion Sticker using a Positioning Magnet Setter, do not use the felt cover of the Positioning Magnet Setter.

Cable Clip Magnet

Cable Clip Magnet / Tool of holding the cable and the jackCable Clip Magnet makes the MSP cable length shorter by rolling and fixing the cable on instruments without endpins like the ukulele. When taking the cable off, slide the tip of clip to left in setting the clip tip down. Please confirm the works before the installation. ( You can learn how to install Cable Clip Magnet at 1 minute 40 seconds after starting the video. )

【NOTES】■ Fixing the MSP connector reduce the weight of cables and connectors and the pulling by the cable swinging to the MSP main unit. That tend to makes the sound and the mounting stable.

Tailpiece Clamp

Tailpiece clamp is a tool of fixing connector jack on double bass / upright bass / kontrabassTailpice clamp Vinyl CoverWhen attaching the MSP plastic jack to the tailpiece of a double bass, please use a Tailpiece Clamp. Place the tailpiece between the jack holder and the hand-tighten; proceed to tighten the nut ( See the picture ).

【NOTES】■ This is not compatible with Neutrik female jack.

How to use

MSP delivers high impedance. Connect MSP to high impedance input of instrument amplifier. When you directly connect MSP to mixer, connect through DI(Direct box) which changes signal to low-impedance. When impedance between MSP and receiver isn't correct MSP may not work well.

Caution

Attention / avoid to injure gingers and boy parts by magnets attracting each other MSP is made by strong neodymium magnets. Do not put fingers or other parts of body between magnets. It may cause injury. Do not put these items near the MSP and Positioning Magnet : credit cards, magnetic cards ( such as commuter passes ), floppy disks, or electrical appliances ( such as computers, devices, caller phones, pacemaker ). It may cause severe damage. Also, it may cause possible interference to pacemaker users. 123sound.jp will not have any responsi bility for any damages to your personal belongings, personal injuries, or any other damages from MSP kit.

Notice

ATTENTION / damege by collision ■ Avoid the collision to MSP, it may damage piezoelectric element in MSP.
■ Don't slam two magnets severely, it may damage your instruments or the magnets. Install slowly.
■ Neodymium magnets are permanent magnets, however, it may lose their magnetic properties. Do not place MSP and Positioning Magnet in temperature of 80℃(176 F) or above. ( such as inside of the car during summer)

ATTENTION / defect by pulling■Don't pull the MSP cable, it may disconnect the cable.
